Have You Been Injured Due To Testosterone Therapy?

Our attorneys at Poulos LoPiccolo PC of Ocean, NJ are now investigating claims for those who believe that use of testosterone therapy may have contributed to heart problems.  If you have recently suffered a heart attack, stroke, or other heart problem after you have used testosterone therapy to increase your testosterone levels, you may have cause to launch a testosterone therapy lawsuit.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily in the testicles. Testosterone helps maintain men’s:

  • Bone density
  • Fat distribution
  • Muscle strength and mass
  • Red blood cell production
  • Sex drive
  • Sperm production

Hypogonadism is a disease in which the body is unable to produce normal amounts of testosterone due to a problem with the testicles or with the pituitary gland that controls the testicles. Testosterone replacement therapy can improve the signs and symptoms of low testosterone in these men.  Doctors may prescribe testosterone as injections, pellets, patches or gels.

While there are legitimate reasons why testosterone therapy may be necessary, many lawyers have reason to believe that the manufacturers of these drugs have not provided people a full disclosure on the risks that come with using testosterone therapy.

Furthermore, according to the New York Times, studies show that 1 in 4 men who use these products never underwent routine blood tests to check for hypogonadism, the disorder that causes severe testosterone deficiency and the only condition for which testosterone therapy is approved.

Scientific Studies Link Increased Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke to Testosterone Therapy

Multiple studies have shown that there is a significant risk to users of testosterone therapy in terms of heart health.  Patients had 2 times the rate of heart attacks when they used testosterone therapy than when they didn’t.  The Journal Of The American Medical Association (JAMA) has shown that people who are older have a 30% higher risk of stroke when using testosterone therapy.  Several other studies suggest that the risk may be even higher!

FDA Warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made announcements that it would investigate allegations that testosterone therapy may be more harmful than beneficial to those who use it.  The FDA is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in men who are prescribed FDA-approved testosterone products. They have been monitoring this risk and decided to reassess this safety issue based on the recent publication of two separate studies that each suggest an increased risk of cardiovascular events among groups of men prescribed testosterone therapy.
