Grieving Parent Writes Powerful Letter In USA Today, Urges Action To Protect Teens Against Social Media Addiction

SocialMediaAddiction

On March 3rd, 2023, Kristin Bride, a grieving mother and a dedicated social media reform advocate, penned a powerful letter in the USA Today. Tragically, her 16-year-old son Carson took his own life after terrible cyberbullying. Kristin Bride and other parents are demanding that congress takes action to hold social media companies accountable. Here, our New Jersey and New York social media addiction lawsuit attorneys discuss this heartbreaking story and explain the rights and options of parents who have children who have suffered harm due to social media.

A 16-Year-Old Boy Took his Life Because of Cyberbullying, Tech Companies Fail to Act

Carson Bride was a teenager from Lake Oswego, Oregon. His mother remembers that he was a kid who could light up a room with his smile. Unfortunately, he had an experience that is becoming far too common for young people in our country: He was subject to severe cyberbullying on social media. In this specific case, Snapchat was the primary social media platform used for bullying. Though, many of the most popular social media platforms amongst young people—Instagram, TikTok, etc—share similar problems.

Kristin Bride is trying to turn the tragedy that her son faced into real change to protect vulnerable children and teenagers. The research is becoming clear: More and more kids are becoming addicted to social media. The big tech companies are not only failing to ensure that their platforms are reasonably safe for minors, they are actively making their products even more addictive. Kristin Bride and other leading social media reform advocates are calling on President Biden and lawmakers in Congress to take action to protect kids and hold social media companies accountable.

There are Lawsuits Against Social Media Companies for Harm Caused to Teenagers

Social media addiction among teenagers has become a growing concern in recent years, and it has resulted in several lawsuits being filed against social media companies for their role in causing harm to teenagers. The biggest cases are against Meta. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram, a whistleblower made huge public disclosures in 2021 confirming what many people already knew: The Social media company was aware that teenagers were becoming addicted and it was designing its platform to take advantage of the addiction. 2023 will be a big year for social media addiction lawsuits. Parents who have children or teenagers who were harmed should know their options. Consult with a lawyer as soon as possible.
