Is Your Ram 1500 Rear Window Destined to Explode? The Hidden Structural Defect Stellantis Isn’t Telling You About

Pickup

Imagine driving down the highway when you suddenly hear a sound like a shotgun blast. You check your mirrors only to find the rear window of your Ram 1500 truck has spontaneously shattered into thousands of tiny shards of glass.

If this has happened to you, you are not alone. Across the country, and right here in New Jersey, at least hundreds of fifth-generation Ram 1500 owners are reporting that their back glass is violently exploding without warning, without an accident, and without any external road impact.

Our firm is actively investigating these spontaneous rear glass failures for a potential consumer class action lawsuit. We are currently seeking New Jersey residents who have experienced this issue to help us hold the manufacturer accountable.

The Root Cause: Why Ram Windows Are Spontaneously Shattering

When a rear window breaks, dealership service departments are quick to blame a rogue pebble or highway debris to avoid paying for a repair. However, internal manufacturer communications and automotive engineering point to deep-seated manufacturing defects:

  1. The Brittle Frame Stress Chain: In fifth-generation Ram 1500 trucks (Model Years 2019–2026), the plastic frame housing the power-sliding rear window is highly prone to micro-fracturing due to normal body flexing and thermal expansion. As the frame cracks and warps, it places immense, uneven mechanical pressure across the perimeter of the tempered glass. Eventually, a minor road vibration or a shift in temperature causes the stressed glass to give way and explode.
  2. Defroster Electrical Arcing: The sliding rear window design requires flexible electrical connections for the heated defroster grid. Over time, these contact points degrade. When an owner activates the rear defroster on a cold morning, the electricity arcs, creating a sudden, extreme hotspot that thermally shocks and shatters the glass.
  3. Cab Ventilation Backpressure: Pickups use pressure-relief baffles behind the rear seats to vent air when doors slam. If these vents are blocked by cargo or frozen shut by New Jersey winter moisture, closing a cab door creates a massive spike in internal cabin pressure, blowing the structurally weakened glass outward.

The Corporate Admission: Stellantis Mandated a Full Replacement

Parent company Stellantis (operating domestically as FCA US LLC) is well aware of the structural integrity issues plaguing these windows. In official Technical Service Bulletins, including TSB 23-098-23 Rev. A, the manufacturer explicitly acknowledges a “manufacturing issue” causing the rear window frame to crack.

FCA’s own internal documents admit that the problem is so severe that a simple patch will not work. Their official directive explicitly instructs dealership technicians to completely replace the entire rear backlite window assembly. To avoid legal recalls, they even quietly extended the rear window warranty to 8 years or 150,000 miles for select older models.

The catch? Despite knowing that these frames crack and cause catastrophic failures, Stellantis has failed to implement a permanent, redesigned engineering fix on subsequent model years. Even worse, once the glass actually shatters on an owner’s truck, the physical evidence of the pre-existing frame crack is destroyed—allowing dealerships to routinely deny warranty claims by claiming an “outside influence” caused the break.

This leaves newer truck owners holding the bill for out-of-pocket replacements ranging from $1,300 to over $2,000.

What We Are Looking For: Are You the Ideal New Jersey Plaintiff?

To build a resilient class action under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, our legal team needs to hear from local drivers. You may be the ideal class representative if you meet the following criteria:

  • You currently own or lease a 2019–2026 Ram 1500 pickup truck.
  • You purchased or leased your vehicle from a dealership located in New Jersey.
  • Your rear window shattered spontaneously (e.g., while parked, upon closing a door, or while using the defroster) with no external impact.
  • You were denied warranty coverage by a dealership or were forced to pay out-of-pocket for a replacement (via Safelite or an independent shop).

Protect Your Rights: Contact Us for a Free Case Review

Automotive manufacturers cannot market vehicles as rugged and safe while continuing to use a window assembly they know is prone to structural failure. If you paid out-of-pocket or were turned away by a Ram dealer after your window shattered, your repair invoices, photos, and service records are vital pieces of evidence.
